Understanding communication requires a holistic approach informed by the culture, identity, and the language varieties of speakers. I conduct theoretical research with the purpose of applying the results to educate and produce accessible materials. My research focus is on indigenous language documentation and revitalization informed by the culture of the people in order to provide a linguistic record of language structures and to develop educational materials.
I am passionate about teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with students to foster an environment that eliminates barriers which inhibit learning. I approach academic and professional advising as a lifelong collaborative investment, with a contextual view of the whole person to help students define their career path.
I have taught a wide variety of courses including general education, introductory, advanced, and graduate level courses on a variety of topics ranging from introductory linguistics to grammar, sociolinguistics, and TESOL. My teaching skills were recognized with an Exceptional Teacher of the Year 2014-2015 from the English Department at Illinois State University. I continually develop new activities and assignments for use in the classroom and integrate current research and research methodology.
